Advanced Placement Latin/Vergil. Course Description:
This course is a comprehensive, college-level study of the Aeneid, the epic poem of the ancient Roman people by Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 BC), in preparation for the national AP Latin examination in May, 2008. This course is intended for juniors, but seniors are also welcome to enroll. According to the syllabus set by the AP Examination, students will read substantial portions of that work in Latin and the whole poem in translation. Considerable literary analysis will be done in this course; students should therefore not only have excellent Latin skills, but must also be very good writers. For a detailed syllabus and course expectations, visit http://www.collegeboard.com/ap/students/latin. In the fifth term, after the AP exam has been taken and until the end of the school year, students will undertake special research and presentation topics.
Requirements: average of B+ in previous (or most recent) year of Latin, signature of previous Latin teacher, and excellent grades in English. Application must be submitted.
NB! Students who enroll in AP Latin/Vergil are expected to obtain their own copy of a translation (recommended: David West, Penguin, revised 2003, ISBN 0140449329), and to read all of the poem during the summer before the course begins; it is also strongly recommended that students obtain their own Latin dictionary. AP Latin/Vergil students are expected to take the National Latin Exam in March.
