Latin 8: Course Description
This course continues and completes the introduction to the world of ancient Rome and the Latin language. The textboooks will be Latin for Americans. First Book and Second Book (8th ed., 1997), which may be supplemented with other materials. Students will thoroughly review elements learned in Latin 7 before proceeding to new subjects, then will resume the First Book at about Lesson XLV and finish it before proceeding to the Second Book. The emphasis in this year's study will be on finite and non-finite verb structures (phrases and clauses) and on developing skills at reading complex Latin sentences and dealing with varied word-order. This year's program should take students at least through Unit III (Lesson XXXIX), and may continue beyond that. Episodes from the story of Hercules in Fabulae Graecae (texts and exercises available online) will be read over the course of the year.
Essential for 8th grade students of Latin are:
a solid knowledge of word-forms and vocabulary;
ability to recognize and identify subordinate structures in a complex sentence;
adaptability in dealing with varied word-order.
