Greek II: Course Description

This course continues and intensifies the study of the ancient Homeric Greek language begun in the junior year. Students will progress to the reading of slightly-adapted to authentic Homeric poetry. Text will be A Reading Course in Homeric Greek, and other materials may be used to supplement. Students will strengthen their knowledge of Homeric Greek and will also advance toward intelligent comprehension and appreciation of the literature they read. Greek II students are also expected to take the National Greek Exam in the spring.
No application is required.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Greek II students will be able to …
--read, with appropriate assistance, slightly adapted and authentic Homeric poetry
--translate selected seen passages
--translate an unseen passage of Greek epic poetry
--identify substantives by case form and function in context
--identify finite and non-finite verb forms and uses
--identify principal types of subordinate structures
--show understanding of the structure of complex Greek sentences
--demonstrate comprehension of both seen and unseen passages
--comment intelligently, in classroom presentations and/or written essays, upon literature read, showing a firm understanding of the Greek original.
